How to vet suppliers before you list their products
In dropshipping, your supplier's performance is your store's performance. The buyer bought from you; every late shipment and wrong variation lands on your reviews. Vet the supplier before the product goes live — here is the checklist.
1 · Store age and score
Prefer sellers with an established store (months of history, consistent listing activity) and an overall positive rate of 95% or higher. A brand-new store can be fine, but make it prove itself on someone else's order first.
2 · Processing time, not just shipping time
Listings show delivery estimates, but the hidden number is processing time — how long the supplier takes to hand the parcel to the carrier. Anything over 48 hours regularly turns a "7-day delivery" into a 12-day experience. Check it in the product's shipping options before listing.
3 · Stock depth on the variations you care about
A listing can show "in stock" while only two of its five variations actually have inventory. If your ad sends traffic to a variation that is perpetually sold out, you refund orders and poison the product's review history. Verify stock on each variation you plan to sell, and re-check weekly.
4 · Read the negative reviews, not the positive ones
Five-star reviews tell you the ceiling; one-star reviews tell you the risk. Sort by worst first and look for patterns: "item not as described", "arrived broken", "never arrived". One-off complaints are noise; repeated patterns are the supplier's real quality level.
5 · Do a test order on yourself
Before scaling, place one order to your own address through the supplier as a real buyer. You will learn the true processing time, the actual packaging quality, and exactly what your customer will experience. It is the cheapest insurance in dropshipping.
6 · Red flags that predict refunds
- Price just dropped far below every competitor for the same item — often a dying stock dump;
- Product photos inconsistent with each other (stolen from multiple stores);
- Listing title stuffed with unrelated keywords;
- Reviews that all arrived within the same two weeks.
The 30-second pre-list checklist
- Store score ≥ 95% positive and established? ✓
- Processing time ≤ 48 hours on your target variation? ✓
- Stock confirmed on every variation you list? ✓
- Negative reviews read, no repeating pattern? ✓
- Test order placed or scheduled? ✓
Five checks before a product goes live will save you dozens of refunds later. That is the whole habit.
